Guitars
Ken says, "My two main touring guitars are a 2007 28" scale Small Jumbo Baritone Guitar tuned B-B for standard intervals and down for alternate tunings, and a 2009 22" scale 00 high-string guitar tuned either DADGBE or CGDGBE both with Cedar tops and Mahogany back and sides custom built by Alan Carruth, Newport, NH."

A note about the high-string. "It's not quite Nashville tuning since I don't replace all the wound strings with strings tuned an octave higher. On my high-string I leave the first 3 strings the same, and replace the D, A, and E strings with strings tuned up an octave."

"When space and travel plans permit I also perform and record with two other Alan Carruth instruments: a 1995 000 14-fret Cedar/Mahogany guitar and a 1996 000 12-fret Englemann Spruce/Mahogany guitar that was my main stage instrument from 1996-2007."

Strings
"I use Thomastik-Infeld Spectrum Bronze strings on all my guitars; medium gauge wound strings with .017 and .020 plain strings on the baritone,a total custom set for the high-string, medium gauge wound with .014 and .018 plain strings on the 000 12-fret for use in alternate tunings, and light gauge wound strings with .013 and .017 plain strings for the 000 14-fret that I use primarily in standard and dropped-D."

Electronics
"I use the LR Baggs passive Hex pickup in all my guitars, run that signal to a D-TAR Mama Bear from that to a Morley A/B/C box and send two signals to a D-TAR Solstice Preamp/EQ and from that to the house while the third signal is sent to a Boss TU-15." Ken also occasionally uses a LR Baggs Core 1 Amplifier.

Accessories

"I use the Planet Waves NS Capo, Black. I have four, one standard, and three that I cut up to use as partial capos: one for DADGAD, one for dropped-D, and one for double-dropped D. I use a custom Diamond Bottleneck Ultimate slide for bottleneck playing on the baritone."
